By Obaseki Anthony on October 19, 2019

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, has said that his ministry will leverage on the thematic areas of the National Youth Policy and youth related funding in other ministries to address the challenges faced by the youth of the country.

Mr. Dare stated this at a budget defence session before the Senate Committee on Sports on Thursday even as he disclosed that the Ministry will first get a sense of Youth related Social Investment Programmes before interacting with the ministries in which they are domiciled.

He told the Committee that “On Social Investment Programmes, the ministry is trying to get a handle and then meet the relevant ministries.”

The Minister, who said the issues that are pertinent in domestic football administration are well known, said: “There is a process ongoing to address the issues in domestic football.”

He however noted the ministry will deliver its mandates better when adequately funded, saying: “When you look at our budget over the years you know that the Ministry is not able to go beyond the level of success we already have.”

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Obinna Ogba, with other members had commended the minister’s innovative approach aimed at increasing private participation in youth and sports development.

Reacting to the funding available to the ministry, Senator Ogba, said: “If we really want to do something in sports there is no way this amount budgeted can do anything.”
