Striker Gift Evbomwan Turning Heads for Nigeria Under-16 as Future Eagles Record Mixed Results at International Dreams Cup in Japan

Edo State-born 16-year-old striker Gift Evbuomwan dazzled all-game-long and provided a magical assist to help Nigeria’s Under 16 cadet team, The Future Eagles, see off their counterparts from Mexico on June 12 at the ongoing International Dreams Cup competition taking place in Miyagi, Japan.

The new kid on the horizon of the national team set-up is proving to be a top class prospect giving his vision, passing ability and direct play that have drawn comparisons with some of the finest accomplished players of world football.

His dribbling and consistent running at opponents proved a handful for the Mexican U16 players who surrendered to the superior firepower of their Nigerian adversaries.

Evbuomwan was a shining light once again in the Future Eagles’ second game against host Japan on June 14, though the Nigerians were eventually overpowered by the Asians 4-1.

Japan had taken an early lead but Evbuomwan provided an assist to help Nigeria draw level. His powerful shot was parried by the Japanese goalkeeper but Adeyeye Damilola was on hand to profit.

Evbuomwan of IB Sports Dreams FC is certainly a star that is born.

Speaking from Japan, he told Daily Sports: “It’s an honur to represent my nation and even provide the key assist that led to the win against Mexico. I want to help Nigeria win this tournament and my dream is to receive a call up to the national U-17 and help the Golden Eaglets win the World Cup in Brazil, later in the year.”

The Future Eagles programme, bankrolled by Zenith International Bank, headlines the youth development vision of the Amaju Pinnick administration of the Nigeria Football federation (NFF), and is a conscious and deliberate effort to reposition Nigerian football through the building of a hygienic pool of talents that will supply the various national teams with decent, well-nurtured talent.

Products of the NFF/Zenith Bank Future Eagles programme won silver medals at the 3rd African Youth Games in Algiers in the summer of 2018, and form the bulk of the present U17 national team heading to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil later in the year.
