Like Super Eagles, Like Super Falcons

By Daily Sports on June 10, 2019

You see dear readers; I detest to the limit the word permutation because it is for the unready and unserious bunch which the Nigerian national teams have cut out for themselves of late.  First, I should not be misunderstood but the fact remains that these are no good times for the Flying Eagles, Super Eagles and especially the Super Falcons currently struggling to find her feet in the France World Women Cup summit.

Let me be honest with you that their performances so far leave a sour taste in the mouth. We are witnesses to the ‘wobbling and fumbling’ of the Flying Eagles that finally met their Waterloo against fellow West African country, Senegal, at the ongoing round of 16 World Youth Championship in Poland.

We saw that the team has no technical bench. Now the Super Eagles played an international friendly game against Zimbabwe preparatory for the forthcoming AFCON in Egypt and we know the outcome now.

To say the least, yours in sports is still in shock from the defence for failure offered by the Franco-German technical hand, Gernot Rohr that the rain disrupted the free follow of the Super Eagles style of play which gave the visitors the barren draw situation. I find it too pedestrian to have come from a national team coach supposedly worth his salt.

I have not hidden my dismay at how Rohr talks and how he quickly finds a ready excuse for all his failures since he took over the management of the national side. He has not helped himself which has adversely affected the full or otherwise output of the Super Eagles.

It remains sad and by extension dangerous, for the team that is one of the contenders in the football hostilities slated for the land of the Pharaohs in few weeks time to struggle with Zimbabwe. It is worrisome and drastic measures must be applied as the side moves to close camping to perfect her strategies and match plans.

Although it is a mere friendly match as many would term it, however it ought to serve as a morale booster for third time African kings that has much in her hands after failing two times to compete in Africa’s biggest biannual football festival. Rohr has shown his un-readiness and un-seriousness for the big job.

One does not need to look too far to know that he has nothing to offer. Late Stephen Keshi took rookies to Nations Cup in South Africa in 2013 and against all odds beat all other comers to game and brought home Nigeria’s third victory at the premier African Nations football meet.

But Rohr disappointingly has a ready answer as he had once told the nation that he is not aiming to win the 2019 tournament. The handwriting is already on the wall and he is ready to give reasons why the Eagles will not do well.

LIKE SUPER FALCONS

Our women national side started on a wrong footing, in their first game against Norway and it will take the miracle of this end time for one of Africa’s representatives to survive the onslaught in the group. Failing 3-0 in an opening remains frightening to say the very least.

The 9th time African Queens were a shadow of themselves as the team posed no threat to her opponents. The girls were just ordinary which gave insight on what may likely happen in their next group games.

Is there any glimmer of hope for the team handled by a white man who those that hired him told Nigerians that the Messiah that would take the African Queens to the Promised Land at the World level has come?  The team did not show any depth against Norway and therefore gave no room for one to believe that they were ready for the game cum tournament.

Fact is that the Nigerian flag bearers have some well exposed and experienced players in the lineup and why they performed so woefully in the first group match remains to be unravelled by bookmakers and sundry.

We pray that the white man puts his house in order and re-jig his match plan and come out stronger, better and more focused against the Korea Republic come June 12; otherwise, the entire squad should get ready to take the next available flight back home. If this happens, the team’s existence must be reviewed critically and repositioned for greater and effective results in future.

Truth is that even the past local hands that handled the girls did well than the so-called white man. As we keep our fingers crossed and put both the NFF and other critical stakeholders on their toes, keep a date with your favourite Daily Sports for updates. As sad and bitter pills as it is, let’s return to our social media handles for further interaction. Keep shooting hard till next week!!
