10-Man Benin Warriors beat Methodist FC of Bauchi to qualify for 2nd round of Gen.David Ejoor cup

Edo state grassroots club Benin Warriors gave a classic tenacious defensive display to edge Methodist FC of Kaduna 1-0 in the ongoing Gen. David Ejoor national football competition in Ughelli,Delta state.

The highly anticipated group D encounter started with Methodist on a slight ascendancy, but Benin Warriors, just like in their first game, quickly grew into the match and took the lead in the 10th minute via a penalty after a Methodist defender had handled a shot by Warriors captain Desmond Oji following a goal mouth scramble.

The penalty was expertly converted by striker Emmanuel Anayo Iwuala.

A few minutes later Iwuala was red-carded after the referee judged him to have stamped on a Methodist defender.

Protests from the Benin Warriors bench fell on deaf ears as the ref stood firm on his decision.

Then the Warriors switched from a 3-4-2-1 formation to a very low block 4-4-1 to completely shut down any attempts by Methodists to find inroads into their 18-yard box.

It was very frustrating for a good Methodist side as they mounted lots of pressure but couldn't break down the Warriors defensive wall well marshalled by Pius Ogieva (a.k.a Baroko) and young Ifeanyi Odu.

The well-drilled Warriors team would have scored a second from several counter attacking moves.

Substitute Happy Ojetene,Midfielder Jeremiah Salami and Desmond Oji burst forward on several occasions but narrowly missed with their shots when faced one-on-one with the Methodist goalkeeper.

Warriors saw off the game expertly in a manner reminiscent of a typical Diego Simeone led Athletico Madrid side.
