Super Eagles and Mainz 05 defender, Leon Balogun will be missing in action as Mainz gun for its 5th win of the season against Freiburg this Saturday.

Balogun was said to have undergone a successful surgery after suffering a fracture to his left hand on Friday.

According to a post by his club, the Nigeria defender was said to have been wounded in the O-Fives Friday session but has been treated.

“Leon Balogun suffered a fracture to his left hand on Friday and has undergone surgery. Luckily, he will be able to carry on playing,” Mainz tweeted.

The injury saw him miss out of his team’s 1-0 victory over Cologne on Saturday as a Daniel Brosinski’s 43rd-minute penalty propelled a ten-man Mainz past their visitors at the Opel Arena.

Details regarding his return were not disclosed, however Mainz 05 believe that the former Fortuna Düsseldorf defender will resume playing soon.

The West Berlin-born defender was last in action for Nigeria’s surprise 4-2 win over Argentina on Tuesday.

He has had his own fair share of injury struggles in the past, having recently recovered from a cheekbone fracture.

Balogun has chalked up 349 minutes from four German top-flight games for Sandro Schwarz’s side and was an ever-present in the Super Eagles’ squad that clinched a sixth World Cup appearance last month.
