The Nigeria Cricket team on Saturday started the ICC World T-20 North-Western qualifiers on a good note, defeating Sierra Leone by 88runs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria batted 165runs in the first innings with six wickets and 20 overs at the event holding at the Tafawa Balewa Square cricket oval in Lagos.

In the second innings, Sierra Leone batted 77runs all out in 18.1 overs.

Chimezie Onwuzulike, Captain of the Nigerian team, told NAN that he was happy with his team’s victory over Sierra Leone.

Onwuzulike, who won Man of the Match award, said that the national side was able to restrict its opponent, while batting and bowling.

“I am happy with our first win in this competition, the win is a major one for the team and we intend to improve on our performance as the qualifiers progress,’’ he said.

Also, Ogbemi Uthe, Coach of the national side, commended his team for playing to instruction all through the match.

Uthe said the players would redouble their effort as they confront Gambia on Sunday.

“It’s a good start for us, but we will not be carried away by the victory because we still have six matches to play and cannot relent till the end of the event,” he said.

NAN reports that Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and host Nigeria, are participating in the event that will end on the 22.

Two teams will qualify from the region to participate in the main Africa qualifiers in 2019. (NAN)
