Plans are in the offing at Premier League leaders Manchester City to hand exciting young midfielder Phil Foden a new long-term contract.

Though discussion on that front has not officially begun, the BBC is reporting that City are keen to tie the 18-year old teenager down by offering him an improved deal.

Foden has broken into Pep Guardiola’s squad this season, making six appearances.

The Stockport-born teenager was a late substitute in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal.

Foden – a lifelong City fan – was named player of the tournament in England’s victorious Under-17 World Cup-winning campaign in October, scoring twice against Spain in the final.

In July he was included in City’s pre-season tour of the United States.

STYLE OF PLAY

Foden can slot across attacking midfield but is perhaps best comfortable in the No.10 role.

He enjoys dictating play, especially further up the pitch, and has a handy knack for knowing where both the goal and his teammates are.

Blessed with great dribbling ability and control, City have been careful to protect him in his development. While others from the Under-16s stepped up to play in the Under-18s two seasons ago, Foden was kept back as it was felt that physically he needed more time.

Judging by his performances for Lee Carsley’s team, he certainly didn’t struggle with the step up last year.

Foden can play on the wing or as a central midfielder.

Arsenal youngsters are skipping training, says club legend Ian Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has been a vocal critic for years of what he considers the sinking standard at Arsenal and his criticism reached its crescendo after Arsenal suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat in the hands of Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Wright argues that there is no basis for his former coach and current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger keeping his job beyond this season giving the poor position the Gunners find themselves this season.

Now Wright has stated that the standards at Arsenal has dropped badly to the point where even young players are skipping training without being held accountable for such indiscipline.

“You’re hearing young players coming into the squad, turning up late for training.

People (are) having to go to their houses to get them to come to training. You know, people not turning up to training – calling in sick,” Wright said.

Wright never revealed names, but his statements are sure to infuriate an already irate group of Arsenal supporters.
