Holland-based striker Cyriel Dessers has said he wishes to play for the Super Eagles even though he has featured for the Belgium U23s and he also believes he can lead the country’s strike force at a time national team selectors are shopping for a top striker.

Dessers, 22, told SCORENigeria it will be a great honour to play for Nigeria.

“Yes of course!,” he said of the opportunity to play for Nigeria. “It would be an honour to play for this nation (Nigeria) and my blood. I never forgot and will never forget my roots.”

“I follow the selection and the games every time, but also the youth teams on big tournaments and the Olympic Games.

“In Belgium there are some players who play for Nigeria right now like Troost-Ekong, Moses Simon, (Henry) Onyekuru and before Ndidi.”

Born in Belgium to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother, Dessers began his career at local club OH Leuven, from where he transferred to Lokeren. After two seasons at Lokeren, he joined Breda, for whom he scored 29 goals and made 13 assists in 40 appearances in the Dutch Eerste Divisie.

Aside Henry Onyekuru, no other Nigerian striker scored more than 20 league goals in Europe last season and that feat earned Dessers a deal with Utrecht and a chance in the Eredivisie next season, and he disclosed how he feels about scoring goals.

“I agree that I like scoring. The feeling it gives you is unbelievable,” he said in an exclusive interview.

“As a striker it’s a pleasure to score goals, but there’s more in it.

“There are more things where you can be important for the team.”
