EPL: Alex Iwobi breaks Mikel Obi’s record

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 8, 2024

Fulham’s Alex Iwobi has surpassed John Mikel Obi’s record for the most minutes played by a Nigerian in the English Premier League.

In Fulham’s recent 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle United, Iwobi played the entire 90 minutes, taking his Premier League minutes tally to an impressive 16,289. This remarkable feat eclipses the previous record of 16,218 minutes held by former Chelsea stalwart John Mikel Obi.

Iwobi’s journey in the Premier League began with Arsenal, where he made his debut on October 31, 2015. After quite a successful stint with the Gunners, the versatile midfielder joined Everton in 2019 before making the move to Fulham last summer.

Iwobi has featured regularly for his respective clubs and racked up valuable minutes on the pitch. This season alone, the 27-year-old has made 24 league appearances for Fulham, scoring five goals. His all-time appearances in the league stand at 247, with a total of 22 goals.

Mikel Obi, the previous record holder, enjoyed a storied career in the Premier League, spending 11 seasons with Chelsea and winning numerous honours, including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and a Champions League crown. Obi had a total of 249 Premier League appearances, scoring 1 goal and making 10 assists.
