W’Cup qualifiers: Eagles camp opens today, Lesotho arrive

By Daily Sports Nigeria on November 13, 2023

The camp of the Super Eagles in Uyo will start bubbling on Monday (today) ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe as the invited players will begin to troop in on the back of impressive performances for their respective clubs, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigeria will take on Lesotho on Thursday, November 16 in their first game of the series at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before travelling to Rwanda for the Zimbabwe clash on November 19.

The Nigeria Football Federation last week released head coach Jose Peseiro’s 23-man list for the game with a maiden call-up for Bayer Leverkusen striker Nathan Tella while Napoli man, Victor Osimhen, AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi are out of the qualifiers due to injuries.

“Officials of the Super Eagles have already arrived in the Akwa Ibom State capital, with the players expected to start trooping into town on Monday,” the NFF said via a statement released by its head of media Ademola Olajire.

The Super Eagles, particularly the strikers are coming into the fixtures with confidence, with new boy Nathan Tella scoring his first Bundesliga goal for Leverkusen in their 4-0 win over Union Berlin on Sunday while Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, who has just regained full fitness, was on target in Forest’s 3-2 loss against West ham in the English Premier League.

Nante’s forward, Moses Simon was also on target for his team on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the NFF also confirmed that Lesotho will also arrive in the country on Monday (today) before moving to Uyo on Tuesday.

“The delegation of Lesotho’s senior men national team, known as Likuena (Crocodiles) for Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifying series Day 1 encounter with the Super Eagles of Nigeria will arrive in Lagos on Monday night aboard a Kenyan Airways flight.

“Thenff.com can reveal that the delegation will sleep over in Lagos, and then fly into Uyo on Tuesday morning where players and officials will be accommodated at the Ibom Hotel and Resorts,” the NFF said.

Olajire also added that the match officials from Tunisia are also expected to arrive in Uyo on Tuesday ahead of Thursday’s battle.

Other teams in Nigeria’s group in the qualifying series for the expanded Mundial in USA/Canada/Mexico are South Africa, Benin and Rwanda.
