Lookman seeks end to six-match drought

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 17, 2023

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman will look to end his goal droughts in the Serie when Atalanta host Empoli in a Serie A fixture at the Gewiss Stadium on Friday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Lookman has failed to score a goal in his last six games for the Italian side and will hope to find the net again.

The 25-year-old Nigeria striker started the season on a bright note and has been impressive for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side scoring 12 goals and has contributed five assists in 25 league matches this season so far.

The former Charlton Athletic star came on for Rafael Toloi in the 89th minute but could not get to the scorers’ chart in Atalanta’s 2-0 loss to Serie A leaders Napoli last weekend.

The Super Eagles striker has scored five goals and contributed three assists in Serie A matches in 2023 and is currently ranked third in the Serie A top scorer’s race behind Nigeria international Victor Osimhen (19 goals in 22 games) and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez who has scored 14 times in 26 games.

The last time he scored was in Atalanta’s 2-0 over Sampdoria in January and has continued to search for his first league goal ever since.

The Nerazzurri have lost five of their last seven matches and have gone four-and-a-half hours without a goal; the club’s longest scoring drought in Serie A for five years – La Dea last endured four consecutive games without finding the net in 2014.

The Bergamo outfit started the season with a 10-match unbeaten run, sitting as high as second in October 2022 before stumbling into the World Cup break with four defeats in five games.

Atalanta have failed to score in three of their last four home games against Empoli.

Now, the former Leicester man will be hoping to put an end to his goal drought and return La Dea to winning ways.

With 42 points from 26 games, Atalanta are sixth in the Serie A standings.
