The chairman of Anambra State Sports Writers Association, SWAN, Mr Tony Oji, has called on the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to create a cricket oval for cricket players to train in.

He described cricket as a noble game that has not only been neglected but under reported.

Oji who spoke during the 57-year anniversary of SWAN in Nigeria held at Bishop Crowther Seminary, Awka, said his executive is working towards impacting the knowledge and reporting techniques of other sports like golf, cricket, baseball, among sports journalists in the state through trainings and seminars.

The chairman said that cricket was chosen as a sport to train sports writers on because it is underreported.

On his part, a veteran sports journalist, Mr Ikem Asika, who lectured the journalists on the game of cricket, decried a situation where football is widely promoted above other sports like cricket, and golf, among others.

He enjoined sports writers to make effort to delve into other sports reportage, saying that is the way to grow and remain afloat in the job.

He said: “The concentration is only on football but football is only one out of so many other sports, yet, others are underreported.

“As a sports writer, you strive to cover other sports activities so that whenever you are called up to cover any sports beat, you will be able to do it without failing. Strive to be versatile, football is not the only sports.”

Highlight of the event include field demonstration of how cricket is played which was preformed by students of Bishop Crowther Seminary, Awka.
