By Daily Sports on July 18, 2020

Morocco international Hakim Ziyech has disclosed how Didier Drogba influenced his decision to join Chelsea.

The attacking midfielder was heavily linked with some of the biggest football clubs in Europe including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC.

However, Ziyech decided to join the Blues from Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Ziyech revealed that he idolized Ivorian legend Drogba, who scored 104 Premier League goals for Chelsea during his playing days.

“When you are a young guy, you always want to play for a big club, in the Premier League of course,” Ziyech told Chelsea’s official website.

“And when I was young the players that played here. It was always a big club so I’m very happy and it means a lot.

“I can remember I was playing in the youths in Heerenveen and we have some teammates, and he was playing [with] Drogba, [Frank] Lampard, just all those big names, [John] Terry,” he added.

“We were always for Chelsea and look now, if you can play here, it means a lot for me.”

The 27-year-old attacker was eligible to play for the Netherlands or Morocco having been born in the Dutch city of Dronten.

Ziyech confirmed his choice to represent Morocco at the international stage in 2015.

He was selected for the final 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup as well as the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals. (African Football)
