It was a sad tale of shock and grief on Sunday as Nasarawa Utd FC defender Chineme Martins slumped during the team’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 23 encounter with Katsina United, in Lafia, and died shortly thereafter.

Gov. Abdulahi Sule, who was at the stadium during the match, was shocked after the news was broken to him at the end of the match.

Players and officials were mourning and crying, unable to celebrate their 3-0 win.

Chairman of Nasarawa Utd FC, Barr. Isaac Danladi, State FA Chairman, Mohammed Alkali, the Executive Secretary of the club Owners Association of Nigeria Alloy Chukwuemeka and the match officials were at the Dalhatu-Araf Specialist Hospital mortuary in Lafia where the body of the late player was deposited.

Lamenting Chineme’s sudden death, the League Management Company (LMC) noted that he was attended to by medics of the two clubs when he slumped and was later rushed to Dalhatu-Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia where he was later pronounced dead

Chairman of LMC, Shehu Dikko, said in a statement that the league regrets the passing of the young man in his prime.

“We commiserate with Nasarawa United and the immediate family of the late player,” Dikko said.

The LMC expects that there would be a standard autopsy to establish the cause of the player’s death.

“It is hoped that the findings of the autopsy would inform subsequent measures, if any that has not been addressed by the existing standard procedure,” the LMC stated, adding:

“Furthermore, the LMC will keep engaging the club and the players immediate family to find the best way possible to offer support in this sad moment for the family and the Nigeria football family at large.”
