Maurizio Sarri chews cigarette butts during Huddersfield vs Chelsea

By Daily Sports on August 12, 2018

MAURIZIO SARRI enjoyed his first victory as Chelsea manager today – but looked like a tense man on the touchline as he chewed a cigarette.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri marked his first Premier League game with a 3-0 victory at Huddersfield – and a sight that Blues fans might get used to.

The Italian boss was spotted chewing cigarette butts during the opening clash of the season as he patrolled the touchline.

Sarri did not light any of the cigarettes, but clutched them throughout the victory against the Terriers.

The former Napoli manager regularly smoked by the side of the pitch while in charge of the Serie A side.

Football grounds have been smoke-free since 2007 since the smoking ban was enforced across the country in all enclosed public places.

SmokeFree England campaigned for the ban to prevent people from inhaling second-hand smoke.

The ban also applies to e-cigarettes, though because Sarri didn't light up, he is not expected to be cautioned for his actions.

Arsene Wenger, Slaven Bilic and Carlo Ancelotti are among the managers to have been spotted smoking in dugouts during their careers before the ban came into action.

However, Sarri had no reason to be anxious on the touchline as his new team cruised to victory in front of a packed crowd in West Yorkshire.

N'Golo Kante was the unlikely opening goalscorer for the Blues before new signing Jorginho introduced himself to the crowd with an extraordinary penalty.

The midfield maestro stroked home his spot-kick in non-chalant fashion, leaping before rolling the ball beyond Ben Hamer.

Pedro completed the opening weekend rout and will hope to keep his space in the team after a mixed season under Antonio Conte in 2017/18.

Sarri will be pleased with his team's efforts, but will we be seeing more of his cigarettes on the touchline in future? (Express.co.uk)
