Anthony Joshua revealed on Tuesday that he has been consulting former world champion Wladimir Klitschko in a boxing brains trust designed to unsettle his rival Joseph Parker ahead of their heavyweight unification fight in Cardiff.

Eleven months ago, the 28-year-old World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation champion went toe to toe with the Ukrainian in an acid test of his credentials in London. Now they have joined forces as part of Joshua’s constant search for self-improvement that should spell bad news for his opponent.

“I’m finding ways to improve and new ways to get better,” said Joshua on Tuesday. “I chat to [Klitschko’s] trainer Johnathon Banks a lot, a friendship which developed from when I trained with Klitschko as a sparring partner. I use the conversations as a way to speak to Klitschko.”

Joshua marvelled that the Ukrainian maintained an unbeaten world title run for nine and a half years. “How did he forever want to improve? I ask these questions. He told me they worked a lot on his jab and his movement before the fight with me. It’s humbling to know that he got beat a few times and managed to come back.”

Admitting that his life in boxing is “an addiction”, Joshua said that “there is no room for mistakes any more” and that he wants to be “the best me”, not content with his 20 fights, and 20 knockouts. “Even in these good times when I’m winning we’re not satisfied. It’s not so much an obsession – it’s just life. I didn’t choose a career path after college or go to uni – I chose boxing. It’s just my career. It’s a challenge to myself isn’t it? How far can I go? But it is an addiction, a challenging addiction, and fun.”
